PAGE 3: Work with styrofoam as material

Styroksi päätyi työssäni ATC-kortin sushirullan sushiriisiksi.

The styrofoam ended up as sushi rice in a sushi roll in my work,which was as an ATC.

Mukana taas hauska labrakuva. :) 

Featuring a fun lab picture again. :)

Sanat kuvailevat tekniikoita ja materiaaleja, joita käytin itse työssä. Sivut koristeltiin vähän vastaavalla tavalla, mikä sopi työhön.

The words are describing the techniques and materials I used for work. The pages are decorated in the same style as the work.

Puiset syömäpuikot koristelin washiteipillä. 

The wooden chopsticks I decorated with washi tape.

Sivun koristuksiin päätyi japanilaisesta sanomalehdestä pyöräytetty kukka, Japanista ostettu kissaleima ja tyttötarra sekä origamipaperista taitettu lintu. 

The decorations on this page include a flower rolled from Japanese newspaper, a cat stamp and a girl sticker bought in Japan and an origami bird.

Kokeilin kangastyössä ATC-korttien kanssa joulukortti-ideaani. Loppujen lopuksi tein tämän tyylisiä joulukortteja, mutta ilman valokuvaani (joulukortit löytyvät täältä). 

In the fabric work I tried my Christmas card idea out in the form of another ATC card. I ended up making this design for Christmas, but without my photo (the Christmas cards can be found here).

Sanat kuvailevat taas käyttämiäni materiaaleja ja tekniikoita kuten edellisellä sivulla. 

The words describe again the materials and techniques used, as on the previous page.

Sivussa on tasku, jonka sisällä on kortti, joka selittää, mikä ATC-kortti on. 

On the side is a pocket with a card that explains what an ATC is.

Paperilla DT: Talvi tuli! / Winter came!

 

Olen innoissani, että talvi tuli vihdoinkin kunnolla myös Etelä-Suomeen! Paljon on nyt lunta, joka helpottaa huimasti pimeitä aamuja ja iltoja. Paperillan tiimi inspiroitui tällä kertaa juurikin tästä: lumihiutaleista, kylmyydestä, jäästä, huurteesta, sinisistä sävyistä ja talvisen luonnon kauneudesta. Talvimaisema kauneimmillaan on luminen luonto auringonpaisteessa ja pientä kirpsakkaa pakkasta (ei tarvii minun puolestani olla mitään -10 enempää). :)

Inspiroiduin talvesta tekemällä synttärikortin ja samassa imussa tein samaan tyyliin kaksi ATC-korttiakin. Nyt pystyin hyödyntämään ylijääneitä paperinpalasia.

I’m excited that winter finally arrived properly also in southern Finland! I have been waiting for the snow, which makes the dark mornings and evenings much more bearable. Our Paperilla team was inspired by this season: snowflakes, frost, blue tones and the beauty of the winter nature. The snowy winter landscape is at its best with a little sunshine and a little frost (no more than -10 is fine with me). :)

Winter inspired me to make a birthday card and in the same creative flow I made two ATC cards with the same style. Now I was able to use some of my left-over paper.

Wanderlust 2016 book

Osallistun tänä vuonna online mixed media -kurssille "Wanderlust". Odotin innolla kurssin alkamista koko syksyn ja vuoden ensimmäisenä päivä tuli vihdoinkin ensimmäinen "oppitunti". Ensimmäisenä tehtävänä saimme tehdä oman art journalin tätä vuoden matkaa varten, johon voimme tehdä vuoden aikana tulevat art journal -haasteet.

This year I'm participating in the online mixed media course "Wanderlust". I was looking forward for the course to start whole autumn and on the first day of this year the first "lesson" finally came. As the first task we made our own art journal for this year's journey in which we can do our art journaling.

Koristuksissa on mukana sekä ostettuja että itse kerättyjä materiaaleja. Kannesta tuli hyvin runsas, koska en osannut lopettaa aikaisemmin. :D 

As decorations I used both purchased and recycled materials. The cover became very rich, because I couldn't stop earlier. :D

 

Kävin lähikirjastosta hakemassa ilmaishyllystä vanhan kirjan tätä tarkoitusta varten. Sain sen nopeammin käyttööni kuin hienot valmiit art journalit nettikaupoista. Koska tämä oli yksi minun kaikki-mulle-heti-nyt -hetkistä, en voinut odottaa postia niin kauan. :D Valitsin vanhan suhteellisen ohuen kovakantisen kirjan, jota kuvittelin, ettei kukaan sitä ehkä haluaisi lukea niin innokkaasti (toisin kuin uudemman näköisiä kirjoja, joita en raaskinut tähän käyttötarkoitukseen ottaa - lukemiseen kyllä). :)

Nappasin vähän vinkkejä netistä (täältä), miten tuunata vanha kirja art journaliksi. Varmistin, että valitsemani kirja on tosiaan sidottu, eikä liimattu ja sitten aloin repimään sivuja irti. Tämän tarkoituksena oli vain se, etten tule käyttämään kaikkia sivuja kuitenkaan ja kirja paisuu muuten sivujen tilpehööreistä liian paksuksi.

I went to our local library to get an the old book from the shelf of free books for this purpose. This way I got it more quickly than if I would have ordered a ready art journal from an online store. Since this was one of my everything-to-me-now moments, I couldn't wait for the mail so long. :D I chose an old relatively thin hardcover book, which I imagined, no one would like to read so eagerly (as opposed to the newer-looking books, where I didn't feel right using for crafting - for reading yes). :)

 
I grabbed a few tips online (here), how to prepare an old book for an art journal. I made sure that the book I choose was really bound by sewing and not glued, and then I started to tear pages out of it. This was because I won't need all pages for journaling and the book otherwise gets too thick.

Maalasin kannen pohjan mustalla gessolla ja siihen päälle pensselillä ja sormin (koska sormin oli parempi) tummansinisellä, turkoosilla ja valkoisella maalilla. Tämän jälkeen unohdin ottaa välivaiheista kuvia. Taisi olla liikaa flow päällä. :)

I painted the cover with black gesso and on top of that I painted with a brush and fingers (because the fingers were actually better) dark blue, turquoise and white paint. After that I forgot to take pictures of the different steps. I must have been in too much of a flow. :)

Seuraavaksi tuunaamaan sivuja art journaliksi! Ensimmäisen haasteen saimme jo.

Seuraavaksi esittelen askartelijaportfoliostani ensimmäiset kaksi sivua: yhteystietosivun ja esittelysivun.

Next, I will present the first two pages from my crafter's portfolio: the contact info page and the presentation.

Suurennuslasi, jolla voidaan katsella kasvatusliuoksen hiivasoluja lähempää, on tehty petrimaljasta ja pipetinkärjestä oranssiksi maalattuna. Suurennuslasin ulkopuolelle jäävät hiivat on niin pieniä, että ne näkyvät vain mikrohelmien muodossa. :)

The magnifying glass, through which the yeast cells in a culture medium can be viewed closer, is made of a petri dish and a pipette tip colored orange. Outside the magnifying glass the yeasts are so small that they appear only in the form of microbeads. :)

Tuossa pussissa minulla on oikeasti kasvattamani hiivaa. Tämä hiivakala oli viikon saalis. 

In that bag I actually have my cultivated yeast biomass. This yeast fish was the catch of the week.

In the corner of the picture there's a mushroom (like in this bottle) and small yeast balls (like in this jewelry).

Askartelijaportfolio / Crafter's portfolio (1/5)

Osallistuin viime vuonna Vuoden askartelija -kilpailuun ja finaalissa piti tehdä portfolio itse. Päätin tehdä sen sitten alusta asti itse eli käytin sivuina kaikenlaisia kartonkinpalasia, joita löysin (esim. muropaketin kylki).

Esittelen monisivuisen portfolioni useammassa erässä, koska sivuissa on niin paljon näytettävää. Kuten olet ehkä töissäni huomannut, tykkään tehdä yksityiskohtia sinne tänne. Niin myös tässä työssä.

Ensimmäiseksi esittelen portfolion kannen. Portfolion otsikkona on "Siiri - askarteleva hiivojen kasvattaja".

I participated last year in a competition for the Year's Crafter and in the finals we had to make a portfolio by ourselves. I decided to my portfolio from scratch so I used different cardboard pieces I found (f.ex. the side of a cereal box).

I will present my multi-page portfolio in many parts, because there's so much to show you. As you may have noticed in my previous works, I like to put small details here and there.

First, I present the cover of the portfolio. The title is in Finnish and it says "Siiri - the crating yeast cultivator".

Kanteen (kuten myös sisäsivuille) tuli hauska kuva labrasta, joita olen myös kerännyt facebook-sivulleni (tänne).

On the cover (as well as on the other pages) I put a funny picture from me in the lab. I have collected these "crazy" selfies on my Facebook-pages (here).

Tykkään käyttää yksityiskohdissa myös kierrätysmateriaaleja. Tässä on vanha auton lamppu.

I like to use also recycled materials as details. This is an old car lamp.
 

Mukana on aiemmin virkkaamani hiiva (täältä) ja lasipallon alla fermentointitankki. Mitä olisi itseäni kuvaava työ ilman bioreaktoria ja pöpöjä?! :D

I also included a previously crochet yeast (here) and a fermentation tank under a glass piece. What would a work presenting me be without a bioreactor and microbes?! :D

Tässä portfolioni esittelyn ensimmäinen osa. Seuraavat neljä osaa tulevat seuraavien viikojen aikana. Portfolioni on aika runsas väriltään ja koristuksiltaan. :)

This was the first part of the presentation of my portfolio. The following four parts will come in the next weeks. My portfolio is quite rich with color and decorations. :)

Ensimmäinen art journal -kansi / My first art journal cover

Koristelin ensimmäisen art journal -kannen! Aloitin art journalin kyllä jo aiemmin, mutta en ole tehnyt kannelle mitään. Sen kirjan kannet ovat edelleen ihan mustat (vahingossa lisätyillä maaliläiskillä), koska tämän tein joululahjaksi.

Mukana koristuksissa on samoja materiaaleja kuten viimeisimmässä "biotekniikan" art journal -aukeamassani (löytyy täältä), koska kirja meni biotekniikan alan henkilölle.

I decorated my first art journal cover! I have started my art journal already, but I have'nt done anything to its cover yet. That book's covers are still untouched (expect for some unintentional paint stains). The book I'm presenting now I made as a Christmas present.

 
I used some of the same materials as I used in my latest "biotechnology" art journal spread (found here), because this book went to a person also in the field of biotechnology.

Olin innoissani, kun keksin tämän sanaleikin: Biokemian kirjassa oli otsikkona "Genes & Gene Expression", jota käytin tässä. Maalasin gessoa Gene-sanan päälle (kuitenkin niin ohuen kerroksen, että se vähän näkyy läpi) ja kirjoitin päälle Art, jolloin siitä tuli "Art Expression" (eli jotakuinkin taideilmaisu geeniekspression tilalle). Täydellinen art journalille! :)

I was thrilled when figured out this word play: The biochemistry book had the title "Genes & Gene Expression", which I used here. I painted a thin layer of gesso on top of the word Gene (not to much, so the word is still visible underneath) and I wrote Art on it, so it became "Art Expression". Perfect for an art journal! :)

Tämä oli ensimmäinen kirjan kansi, jonka koristelin, mutta ei viimeinen. Lupasin jo tehdä toisen lahjaksi. Ja tarviin toki itsekin omani. :) Toivottavasti seuraavien kohdalla muistaisin ottaa välivaihekuviakin. Ensimmäinen on aina enemmän tyylin hakemista ja kokeilua ja siksi kuvien ottaminen usein unohtuu. :)

This was the first book cover, that I decorated, but it won't be the last. I already promised to make another one as a gift. And of course I need my own. :) I hope that the next time I will remember to take a few pictures during the crafting. The first one is always a bit more style searching and experimenting and therefore, taking pictures is often forgotten. :)
