Paperilla DT: Kuvioiduista sivuista valmiiksi työksi / Using my own patterned paper

Kokeilin uutta tekniikkaa Gelli-levyllä, jossa käytettiin sabluunoita. Tulokset ovat mahtavat! Printtejä tuli sekä valkoiselle kartongille että kopiopaperille. Tein niistä kaksi vihkomuotoista art journalia. Toisesta tuli jo matkapäiväkirja, jonne kirjoittelen ja liimailen juttuja.

I tried a new technique with my Gelli plate using stencils. The results are spectacular! I printed on white cardboard and copy paper. I made two booklet-shaped art journals with them. The other one is already a travel diary where I write and glue stuff in.

Toiseen art journaliin laitoin kaikki testisivut ja muut printtauksen aikana syntyneet värikkäät sivut (esim. sivut, johon putsasin telan maalista). Tulipahan nekin käytettyä! :)

For the second Art Journal I used all my test pages and other colorful pages that I made during the printing process (eg. pages I cleaned my paint roller on). I even managed to use those then! :)

Jotkut sivut on tosi kauniita ja värikkäitä. 

Some pages are beautiful and colorful.

Jotkut ei taas ole ihan niin upeita, mutta silti tykkään! Niihin on hyvä kirjoittaa mustalla tai valkoisella kynällä.

Some are less amazing, but I still like them! I can write on them easily with a black or white pen.

Wanderlust art journal pages

 

Olen tehnyt kaksi uutta art journal -sivua Wanderlust -kurssin aiheista. Ensimmäinen on aiheesta "I'm ready to" (=olen valmis), johon liimasin taustalle vanhoja kirjansivuja tuomaan extraa taustaan.

I have done two new art journal pages with themes from the Wanderlust course. The first one is for the prompt "I'm ready to".  I glued old book pages to the background to give a little extra.

Toinen on tammikuun haasteeseen. Katsoimme ulos ja valitsimme kolme väriä, joiden perusteella kerroimme tammikuusta. Olin väitöstilaisuudessa ja siksi mukana on tohtori ja hiivoja. :) Täällä Pohjois-Irlannissa alkaa pikkuhiljaa kevät ja siksi väritkin ovat raikkaat. 

The second page is for the January challenge. We looked out of our windows and we chose three colors and with them we told about our January. I was at doctoral defense and, therefore I have a doctor and yeast. :) Here in Northern Ireland it's slowly getting more and more like spring and therefore the colors are nice and fresh. 

Unohdin laittaa tämän mukaan kilpailuun, mutta jaan tämän nyt kuitenkin blogissani. :)

I forgot to add this for the competition, but I will still post it on my blog. :)

Jehkotar CRAFTchallenge DT #16: Helmikuu / February

On taas uuden haasteen aika! Helmikuun Jehkotar CRAFTchallenge -haasteessa tykkäsin kuusikulmasesta muodosta, jotka laitoin kiiltokuvakukan alle. Maalasin niistä sopivan värisiä ja pistin vähän kultaa tuomaan bling-blingiä. :)

It's time for a new challenge! I loved the hexagonal pattern in February's Jehkotar CRAFTchallenge and I put them under the flowers. I painted them to have the color I wanted. And I added some gold to bring bling bling. :)

Taustalla on vanha eläinkirjan sivu, vesiväriä, kuplamuovilla leimattua maalia ja mustaa värisuihketta. Niin paljon kaikkea, mutta silti sain korista rauhallisen. Tykkään.

The background is from an old animal book and on it is watercolor, paint stamped with bubble wrap and black mist. So much stuff, but I still managed to end up with a simple card. I like it.

Paperilla DT: Laatikoiden kätköistä bongattua / Treasures from the bottom of the box

Minulla on paljon kaikkea laatikoiden pohjalla (minulla on useampi laatikko, koska aarteita on niin paljon). :) Nyt tein pienen art journal -kirjan laatikon pohjan kankaista ja kierrätyspapereista. Tämä art journal on pieni, koska sinne on sitten helppo ja nopea tehdä taidetta. Tarkoitus olisi tehdä edes jotain pientä luovaa joka päivä. Siihen tämä pieni kirja on juuri sopiva. Idea tähän syntyi viime vuoden Wanderlust -kurssilla. Kurssin vetäjä Kasia Avery neuvoi, että joka päivä kannattaa tehdä jotain taidetta ja Joanna Grant teki pieniä art journal -kirjoja kierrätysmateriaaleista. Näiden yhdistelmänä syntyi idea tehdä tämä art journal. Tein itse asiassa kaksikin, koska ensimmäinen täyttyi niin nopeasti. :)

I have a lot of boxes with collected and recycled things (I have more than one box, because there are so many treasures). :) Now, I made a small art journal with these materials. This art journal is small, because I wanted a place to make easy and quick art. My purpose is to do even a little something creative every day. For that, this little book is perfect. I got this idea from last year's Wanderlust course. Our teacher Kasia Avery recommended to make art every day and Joanna Grant made small art journals from recycled materials. These combined gave me the idea to do this art journal. I actually made two, because the first one was full so quickly. :)

  

Sivuina olen käyttänyt vanhaa oppimateriaalia. Nämä sivut aminohapoista ovat paksumpaa paperia ja siksi sopivia tähän haitarimuotoiseen art journaliin.

The pages are old teaching materials. These pages of amino acids are thicker paper and therefore suitable for this accordion-shaped art journal.

Toisen art journalin kansi on maalattu mustaksi. Kirjoitin siihen art journalin tarkoituksen eli "tee taidetta joka päivä".

The second art journal's cover is painted black. I wrote the purpose of the journal on the cover: "make art every day."

Tässä muutama esimerkkisivu, joihin olen käyttänyt laatikon pohjan materiaalia.

TUTORIAL

Kuten aiemmin mainitsin, käytin sivuina vanhaa oppimateriaalia. Kansiossa on piirtoheitinkalvoja ja paksumpia sivuja. Jälkimmäisiä käytin tämän art journalin sivuihin. Toisessa art journalissa on yksi A4-sivu leikattuna kahtia ja toisessa on kaksi, jolloin jälkimmäiseen tuli pidempi haitari.

Like I mentioned earlier, the pages are from a pack of old teaching material. The folder contains transparent and thin cardboard pages. The latter I used in the art journal as the accordion pages. The second art journal contains one and the second two A4 pages.

Kansina käytin kartonkia, joka tuli paketin mukana. Tähän käy myös mikä tahansa muu kartonki (kuten muropaketti). 

As the covers I used cardboard that came with something I ordered. This could be any kind of cardboard (f.ex. from a cereal box).

Leikkasin A4:n keskeltä kahtia, taitoin puolikkaat haitariksi ja liimasin reunimmaiset sivut yhteen. Kannet ovat hieman isompia kuin sivut.

I cut an A4 from the middle in half, folded the two halves into an accordion and glued the edge pages together. The covers are slightly bigger than the pages.

Leikkasin kivasta kankaasta palat ja liimasin ne kansiin.

I cut pieces of nice fabric for the covers and glued them on the cardboard.

Liimasin reunimmaiset sivut kansiin kiinni. Käytin liimana gel mediumia, mutta mikä tahansa kestävä liima varmasti toimii yhtä hyvin. 

I glued the edge pages on the covers. I used gel medium as a glue, but any other glue probably also works.

Minulla on useampi laatikko täynnä aarteita. Tässä on kaksi laatikkoa täynnä vanhoja kirjoja ja kierrätyspaperia kuten esimerkiksi omia vanhoja piirrustuksiani, lehtien sivuja, paperikasseja, oppimateriaalia, käyttämättömiä gelli-printtejä ja tyhjiä koepapereita. Aarteita! (Ja kyllä, minun pitäisi siivota ja järjestää askarteluhuonettani paremmin. :D)

I have more than one box full of treasures. Here are two boxes full of old books and recycled paper, e.g. my old drawings, magazine pages, paper bags, teaching material, unused Gelli prints and blank examination papers. Treasures! (And yes, I should clean and organize my craft room better. :D)

Wanderlust 2017 alkoi! / Wanderlust 2017 started!

Päätin ottaa tällekin vuodelle Wanderlust -kurssin. Vaikka en ehtinyt tehdä niin montaa kurssityötä viime vuonna, opin silti uusia juttuja, joita olen soveltanut siellä sun täällä. Tänä vuonna opin toivottavasti lisää.

Tein tälle vuodelle oman Wanderlust -kirjan. Viime vuonna käytin vanhaa kirjaa, nyt tein ensimmäistä kertaa art journalin pehmeillä kansilla. Inspiroiduin tekemään pehmeäkantisen ommellun kirjan, kun näin Susie LaFondin Wanderlust-videon viime syksynä. Käytin kannessa kangasta, jonka värjäsin itse Indigo-värjäyskurssilla. Saatan koristella kantta lisää myöhemmin, nyt siinä vain lukee leimattuna Wanderlust 2017. Se saa nyt riitää. :)

I decided to take the Wanderlust course this year, too. Although I didn't have that much time to do as many course works last year, I still learned new things that I have incorporated here and there in my art work. This year, I hope to learn more.

I made a Wanderlust book for this year as well. Last year I used an old book as an art journal, but now I made an art journal for the first time with soft covers. I got inspired to make a sewn soft cover, when I saw Susie LaFond's Wanderlust video last autumn. I used fabric, which I had dyed by myself in an Indigo dyeing workshop last autumn. I might decorate the cover more later, now it only has stamped Wanderlust 2017 on it. And for now it will be enough. :)

Art journalin sivuina on valkoista kartonkia (myös pari extrapitkää sivua), käyttämättömiksi jääneitä gelli printtejä, värikkäitä paksuja sivuja Flow-lehdestä ja pari sivua vanhaa oppimateriaalia (pelastin pari kansiota edellisen työpaikan toimistosiivouksessa). Halusin, että jotkut sivut ovat valmiiksi värikkäitä, mutta joskus (tehtävästä tai ideasta riippuen) on kiva aloittaa tyhjältä sivulta.

The pages in the art journal are white cardboard (including a pair of extra long pages), unused Gelli prints, colorful thick pages from the Flow magazine, and a couple of pages of old teaching material (I saved some folders from my previous job's office cleaning). I wanted that some pages are already colorful, but sometimes (depending on the task or the idea) it's nice to start with a blank page.

Tein jo ensimmäisen sivun. Kasia kehotti meitä miettimään, mm. mitä me haluamme taiteestamme tänä vuonna. Keräsin vasemmalle puolelle ajatuksia ja lopuksi tein niiden pohjalta yhden kokoavan ajatuksen "isommin ja rohkeammin mukavuusalueen ulkopuolella". Usein teen suhteellisen pieniä art journal -sivuja omaan tuttuun tyyliini. Tänä vuonna haluan kokeilla enemmän uusia tekniikoita ja väriyhdistelmiä ja mennä siten myös mukavuusalueen ulkopuolelle. Haluan tehdä enemmän isojakin canvas-töitä, joita en ole "uskaltanut" tehdä niin paljon vielä.

I already made the first page. Kasia urged us to consider e.g. what we want from our art this year. I collected thoughts on the left side and finally then I summarized them to one statement "bigger and bolder outside the box". Often, I made end up making relatively small art journal pages with my familiar style. This year I want to try more new techniques and colors combinations and go more outside the box and my comfort zone. I would like to do more bigger canvas works that I was "too afraid" to do that much so far.

Jehkotar CRAFTchallenge DT #15: Tammikuu / January

Uusimmasta Jehkottaren CRAFTchallenge -haasteesta nappasin auton ja matkustusteeman. Minulla on nimittäin kasa vanhoja tiekarttoja ja ne olivat juuri sopivia tähän haasteeseen. Mukana on paria eri tiekarttaa ja välissä on revitty maisemavalokuva tuomassa lisää maastoa. 

From the latest Jehkotar CRAFTchallenge I grabbed the car and the travel theme. I have the pile of old road maps, and they were just perfect for this challenge. There's different pieces of the road map and inbetween is a torn piece of landscape photographs to give more ground. 

 

Tein lisäksi toisen setin, jossa taustalla on samoja tiekarttoja, mutta aiheena on kamera.

In addition I made another ATC set with road maps in the background. Here the focus point was a camera instead of cars.

Paperilla DT: omat leimat / handmade stamps

Tein muutamia leimoja itse kaivertamalla kumipalaan. Se on kivaa, vaikkakin välillä vähän hankalaa. En osaa tehdä erityisen tarkkoja leimamalleja, mutta se ei haittaa! Tykkään omien leimojen hieman epätarkasta jäljestä. Näissä ATC-korteissa on taustalla kaksi eri leimaa.

I made a few stamps myself by engraving in rubber pieces. It's fun, but sometimes also a bit tricky. I'm not able to make accurate designs, but that's okay! I like my own stamps because of their slightly messy and inaccurate stamping. These ATC cards have two different stamps in the backround.

Kuvat on vanhasta kuvakirjasta kukattomista kasveista (esim. sienistä ja levistä) - tosi hienoja kuvia!

The pictures are from an old book I found in a second hand book fair "Flowerless Plants" - beautiful pictures!

Tässä tekemäni leimat. Leimaan niillä enimmäkseen maalia, koska näiden pesussa en ole niin tarkka (ja se on muutenkin helpompaa kuin ykistyiskohtaisten kaupallisten leimojen).

Here are my handmade stamps. I use mainly paint with them, because with these I'm not so strict with cleaning them afterwards (and commercial detailed stamps are anyway a lot more difficult to clean).

Kannattaa ehdottomasti kokeilla tehdä omia leimoja! Tekniikoita on monenlaisia ja malli voi olla mikä vain - yksinkertainen tai yksityiskohtainen. Se on sinusta kiinni! :)

I encourage you to make your own stamps! There's plenty of techniques to try and the design can be anything - something simple or with a lot of details. It's up to you! :)
